Numbers – up to 25 participants
Session programme
Each session delivers a two hours’ dive into practical script work
Warmup and setting the scene
A quick mindset and confidence exercise to help a varied experience group to feel comfortable together.
Body, breathing and voice warmup for relaxation, breathing control and volume.
Verbal warmup with tongue twisters and chants for clarity and authority, accuracy and emotion.
A short introduction to stagecraft and stage setup, highlighting the importance of the audience being able to see, hear and understand the story.
Script preparation
The group then splits into smaller groups of 2-6 people, with opportunities for those who wish to direct, and is each given one of our original short plays to rehearse, set and get on its feet.
The main event – performance
And the last hour sees each group performing their play script in hand, with reflection and feedback from the group.
Participants’ responses
“Tonight I have had so much fun being a Director and Actor – totally smashed it and so much positive energy and feedback – absolutely loved it.” Steven Valentine
“Great to perform a monologue on Monday evening, written by Philippa Hammond, really had fun with it and thoroughly enjoyed going from polite to VERY angry with a huge dollop of sarcasm in the middle. I’d like to perform more with this range.” Tristan Wolfe
“Fantastic evening at the New Venture Theatre participating in their evening class.” Sophie Methuen Turner
“It’s not every night that you can masquerade as an estate agent that turns into a ghost and then into a Dalek! Working from a script ‘Haunted’, together with Ashley and Phil, we embellished it a little! Just wanted to say thanks to Philippa Hammond and Thomas Everchild for a brilliant acting class tonight at New Venture Theatre Brighton. It was wonderfully freeing and friendly and so much fun. I really recommend it to anyone, experienced or new to acting.” Alexxa Flexxa
