About your Confident Public Speaking session

If you’re preparing for a particular event, it’s wise not to book a coaching session for the day before.
Best to take your session well in advance, to allow time for that new knowledge to settle, for you to practice your new skills and that great new confidence to grow.

For preparation I’ll ask you to do three things:

    • Imagine you’ve been asked to introduce yourself to a group and you want to let them begin to know, like and trust you.
    • Think about your achievements, your skills, what you do that makes a difference.
    • Prepare your elevator pitch – your answer to the question ‘who are you and what do you do – and what makes you so great!’
    • And do let me know if there’s anything you’d specifically like to address – any worries, previous negative feedback, perceived weaknesses and so on.
    • Everything’s confidential.

    I’ll share

    • Some insider essentials that actors and great public speakers have always used
    • My honest, respectful and constructive feedback
    • Plus exercises and actions to take away.

We can do a lot in a Power Hour, and you’ll leave with plenty of homework to practice.

  • Reading Your Work To An Audience Workshop

A one hour online 1-1 personal development Power Hour

With trainer and actor, Philippa Hammond

For writers of fiction, non fiction, poetry and prose who’d like to polish their personal and professional impact

    Why learn to read well?

Reading your work aloud to an audience in bookshops, writers’ groups, literary festivals etc – it’s a great way to get yourself and your work known to the world.

But so often things can get in the way!

    Mindsets can sabotage confidence

    Nerves can overwhelm

And lack of breathing and vocal control can make us speed up, speak too quietly and be harder to follow.

    This session will help you

Beat nerves and build confidence so you can enjoy the experience

Learn some actors’ and audiobook readers’ techniques for looking and sounding your best

Captivate and keep your audience’s attention and interest.

Please bring a short piece of your writing (a couple of minutes or so) and something you’re happy to scribble in (eg a magazine or news article) for practice exercises.

    No other prep required.

    What they’re saying

‘Your workshop about speaking well at Hove Library was so good, it was what we all needed … everyone was happy, they learned and enjoyed the practice … that paragraph about what the audience wants is like a bible to always have in mind. I also liked to receive the tongue twisters and it was fun to try it … it will be lovely if you can come again and give us some text to practice.’

    Julia Martínez

‘Very warm, knowledgeable, great delivery … practical advice … thank you very much’

    Sarah Agnew

‘I enjoyed it very much – very useful … she speaks very well … knows her subject well … please could you arrange more of this … very helpful and increased my knowledge’

    Marjan

    ‘Amazing … great … 10/10’

    Jane

A fun, helpful session in a safe, supportive space.

Available as an online 1-1 Power Hour or an in person workshop event for your group.

If you’d like to book a session or workshop, do let me know.

    Participants’ responses

“Tonight I have had so much fun being a Director and Actor – totally smashed it and so much positive energy and feedback – absolutely loved it.” Steven Valentine

“Great to perform a monologue on Monday evening, written by Philippa Hammond, really had fun with it and thoroughly enjoyed going from polite to VERY angry with a huge dollop of sarcasm in the middle. I’d like to perform more with this range.” Tristan Wolfe

“Fantastic evening at the New Venture Theatre participating in their evening class.” Sophie Methuen Turner

“It’s not every night that you can masquerade as an estate agent that turns into a ghost and then into a Dalek! Working from a script ‘Haunted’, together with Ashley and Phil, we embellished it a little! Just wanted to say thanks to Philippa Hammond and Thomas Everchild for a brilliant acting class tonight at New Venture Theatre Brighton. It was wonderfully freeing and friendly and so much fun. I really recommend it to anyone, experienced or new to acting.” Alexxa Flexxa
